MAHEC seeks to fill a part-time (20 hour/week) position of Statistician to join our Division of Research. The Statistician is responsible for providing advanced statistical design, programming, and interpretation in support of Division of Research projects.

This position represents an exciting opportunity to leverage the unique data resources of MAHEC to support cutting edge research in the areas of pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, economic evaluation of health services, and health services research. MAHEC is dedicated to serving as a national leader in improving care in the areas of: substance use and mental health, pain management, women's health, rural & population health, and geriatrics.

The position is accountable for 1) developing statistical analysis plans for grants and unfunded projects, 2) conducting sample size calculations, 3) conducting advanced analyses, 4) researching and staying current on advances in statistical applications and software, 5) determining best software for different analytic approaches, and 6) providing statistical consultation to faculty and students as needed.


Specific duties include:

  • Write and validate statistical analysis programs using R, Python, SAS, STATA or equivalent
  • Manage large datasets; move and merge data files from different platforms (e.g., SQL, Excel, SAS), clean, aggregate data and perform quality control
  • Use statistical software to conduct advanced sample size and power calculations
  • Provide data visualization services and analytical expertise to facilitate data interpretation
  • Prepare, review and interpret technical reports, abstracts, manuscripts and contract deliverables.
  • Contribute to study protocols, research plans, and research methodologies.
  • Present findings and results of research tasks and analyses to faculty, staff and other professional audiences.
  • Participate in database development, quality of data analyses, programming, and documentation


Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Masters Degree in Statistics or Epidemiology AND at least three (3) years experience in applied statistics, preferably in a health or medical practice setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical, translational, and epidemiologic research methods and concepts
  • Proficiency in conducting data analyses using R, Python, SAS, Stata or equivalent; interest in learning SUDAAN or other applications, as necessary.
  • Ability to conduct a variety of advanced statistical analyses including hierarchical linear modeling, structural equation modeling, interrupted time series analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Research experience in the health sciences arena preferred
  • Experience working with large national-level datasets preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare settings, and working in teams and collaborative groups is essential, along with knowledge of health care and public health policy issues.
